Dragonfly 2 ZDP-189 – Tactically practical
The Dragonfly 2 ZDP-189 from Spyderco. This is a special sprint run model of the Dragonfly 2 with ZDP-189 Steel and British Racing Green FRN handles. Far too small for Tactical use, but up for any EDC task whatsoever from working in the warehouse to spreading cream cheese on a bagel after cutting it in half. The Blade is a Flat Ground leaf shaped/Drop point measuring just 2.25” long.
The ZDP-189 is a very high performance premium stainless PM Steel that has almost triple the carbon content of 154CM and double that of S30V. Couple that with an extremely high Chromium content and you have a steel that can be hardened to 65HRC easily and it still won’t be too brittle to use every day. It’s tough, durable, and came razor sharp from the box and stayed hairpopping through all testing with no need to touch up the edge at all. I have a feeling that the properties of the steel will make it somewhat more difficult to sharpen but with its extreme edge holding capability, it’s more than worth it.
The Jimping on the Thumb ramp and front choil are sharp and offer excellent control pads for precision tasks. Lockup is via Lockback and is very tight, no play out of the box or after much use. As with most Lockbacks, deployment is smooth but slower. The handle is made from FRN with Spyderco’s awesome dual direction texturing for traction perfection. I love this Color and the handle is so comfortable I literally used it for an hour straight of just tearing down Boxes at work with zero discomfort or hotspots. It comes with a 2way wire clip, right/left tip up. All in, this blade weighs just 1.2oz and is so featherlite it completely disappears on/in the pocket.
The Dragonfly 2 ZDP-189 can be had for around $65 and while that may seem steep for such a small knife, this little performer will keep cutting for years and you’ll never feel burdened by carrying it.
